Emissions avoidance

We avoid emissions through investment in low carbon technology. In our society, we remove raw materials from the ground with no way of replacing them and emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere with no way of removing them. Since this approach is unsustainable, we have introduced a way of powering the production of packaging from renewable energy, powered by food and drink waste.

Packaging production powered by waste

We have learnt about the circular economy, inspired by nature, aimed at eliminating waste altogether. The paper industry already has a mostly circular model, but what about emissions associated with the energy requirements of producing and recycling paper?

McLaren Packaging have a significant minority shareholding in the waste to energy plant CorrBoard Bio Energy: the world’s first sustainable energy generation facility fuelled by organic waste to provide heat and electricity for the manufacture of on of our key raw materials, corrugated sheet board.

The plant facilitates the manufacture of low carbon corrugated sheet board by diverting 25,000 tonnes of organic waste to the Anaerobic Digester (AD) from which biogas is produced and burned generating heat and electricity for the manufacture of our corrugate board.

Any electricity generated that exceeds the demands of CorrBoard, our corrugated sheet plant next to the AD plant, is exported to the grid to help avoid emissions used to power our operations at Port Glasgow.
